What I got was one of the most epic battle themes of all time. When it started I though this would be a another awesome Meguro rock track. ĭeserves the 3 mentions it already has in this thread.Ĭhoice 2 - Shoji Meguro: Persona 3: The Battle for Everyone's Soul I was very tempted to go with Fisherman's Horizons Original for Uematsu. Then the chime bells kick in and it makes you realize how amazing this place is. The harp and the flute type melody really made everything so mystifying and mysterious. You're thrown in to some new crazy looking world. Proved very difficult, but I managed to narrow it down eventually.Ĭhoice 1 - Nobuo Uematsu: Final Fantasy IX: Terra The forbidding and strange tone of the soundtrack is really well complimented by the Genesis sound design.ĭecided to go with 1 track per composer and only 1 game from each series. One of the greatest soundtracks of that era interpreted as if it were on the Genesis. Like Go Straight, this track is a stellar example of the sound chip playing to all it's strengths: funky synths and ancient percussion joining to make something badass.įor fun. Showing the system could do haunting, lovely tracks this one always stood out to me when playing Bloodlines. Iron Blue Intention is the more popular track from this game but I prefer this enchanting tune. That's perfectly reflected in this track that took the grungy sound of the Genesis sound chip and made it work perfectly for a post-apocolypic robot nightmare.Ĭastlevania Bloodlines - The Sinking Old Sanctuary While Contra 3 is one of my favorite games, Hard Corps was faster, crazier and more manic. Yuzo Koshiro still spins this stuff in clubs and it as amazing today as it was then. Of course this has to be included, arguably the go-to track (outside of Sonic music) to show the Genesis could do awesome music. Certain composers were able to make the most out of the hardware and make it sing. The Genesis didn't have as powerful sound hardware as the SNES, but it's just that hurdle that made the best music that more special imo. In fact, I'm not sure I could think of any other segment of a song that has struck me so deeply as this, and not just among game music either.įive favorite Genesis tracks. Now, I've never actually played through AIR (or any of key's VNs, for that matter), but I absolutely adore this song, especially the part between 1:55 and 2:30. OK, so this isn't a game in the sense that probably most people would think of it, but visual novels are considered as such, so I'm going to put it on here. So I'll just say that I love them all, and it's by far my favorite "romantic" music from a game.ĪIR - Natsukage - composed by Jun Maeda (key) Julia and Love Grows are also fantastic in their own ways - I like piano renditions, and Love Grows is probably the most "complete" version. Waltz is associated with my favorite FMV from FFVIII (and quite possibly my favorite game FMV scene, period).

Faye Wong is my favorite female vocalist, but the Engrish-ness of the lyrics does detract from it a bit. They're all variations on a theme, so I'm just going to count all four as one. In fact, my biggest problem is trying to decide which version I like best. I'm not sure I can quite express it into words, but I'm reminded of both gameplay (low key stealth) and story (political conspiracy) elements of the game when I hear the song.įinal Fantasy VIII - Eyes on Me / Waltz for the Moon / Love Grows / Julia - composed by Nobuuo Uematsu, performed by Faye Wong I think the song does a wonderful job of telling a "story" that encompasses so much of what MGS is. The song is synonymous with the series, and this is my preferred version. Metal Gear Solid 2 - "Metal Gear Solid" Main Theme - composed by TAPPY, remixed by Harry Gregson-Williams As that intro FMV plays, and the song transitions from its sorrowful beginning to a fast tempo excitement that ultimately reaches its crescendo at the very end, you realize what an absolutely amazing job Mitsuda did with this game.

CC is widely regarded as having one of the best soundtracks ever, and no time is wasted on that excellence manifesting itself upon the player. To me, it's the best, most famous, and most impactful of the songs from Chrono Cross. it comes down to the fact that there simply is no other song that can make a bittersweet emotion swell up inside me quite like this one, and certainly not among other gaming music.Ĭhrono Cross - CHRONO CROSS ~Scars of Time~ - composed by Yasunori Mitsuda Tina's Theme is my favorite piece of music from a game, ever - I love every version of it from the original to the vocal, but my favorite has to be the piano rendition. I had a lot of difficulty narrowing it down to 5, but the top 2 on this list were easy. Mine is also going to be very heavily biased towards JRPGs.įinal Fantasy VI - Tina - composed by Nobuo Uematsu
